Two questions decide it
Can your audio leave your Mac? If yes, the cloud apps are open to you and some of them are excellent. If no — client work, health data, anything under NDA, or just preference — that cuts the list roughly in half before you compare anything else.
Do you want to own it or rent it? Subscriptions run $7.50 to $17 a month here. One-time licences run $29 to $149. The crossover is usually somewhere between month seven and month fourteen.
Everything else — accuracy, latency, model choice — is closer between these apps than any of their marketing suggests.

- Spend nothing first: Apple Dictation is already installed and on-device. If it works for you, stop here.
- Cheapest that is actually good: VoiceInk at $29 one-time, open source, local. Free if you compile it yourself.
- Most polished, if cloud is fine: Wispr Flow.
- Most configurable: superwhisper — deepest mode system, local and cloud models.
- Transcribing recordings, not typing: MacWhisper. Different tool.
- Meetings: Otter.ai. Also a different tool.
- Ours: FreeFlow, $99 once for three Macs, entirely on-device, per-app modes and a personal dictionary. Best fit if you want offline and one payment and you are only on a Mac.
